Auditions
Please contact Lynn, the membership chair (membership@silknsounds.org), prior to visiting a rehearsal so that materials can be made ready for you. You can expect to be greeted by our membership chair. While the chorus begins its vocal education, the director will “voice place” you, which means that she will determine which of the four parts (known as tenor, lead, baritone and bass) is most suited to your particular voice and musical experience. We will loan you a guest folder containing the sheet music for the songs in our repertoire and you will be invited to join the chorus on the risers. If you prefer, you may sit and listen as the chorus rehearses. We know you’ll enjoy the laughter, learning and love that characterize a Silk’n Sounds rehearsal!
If you are interested in auditioning you may take home the sheet music and audio learning tracks for a chorus song. When you feel ready, and after you have attended at least four rehearsals, you may request an audition. The audition, given by the Director and the section leaders, will check your ability to hold your part against the other three.
The Director and section leaders will notify you and the Membership Chair of the results of the audition. If you have passed the audition, the Membership Chair will assist you in your formal application for membership. The audition is the first step in a two part application process.
The application process includes an orientation meeting with the Membership Chair and one or two Board representatives. The orientation meeting provides an opportunity for you to ask questions, raise concerns and learn about Silk ‘n Sounds’ membership expectations. Following the orientation session, the Board votes on your application. When your application has been approved by the Board, your initial dues are payable. Chapter membership becomes effective at the time of payment.
Prospective members are encouraged to move through the audition and application process at a pace that is comfortable for them. Some members audition and complete the application process in just over a month, learning the repertoire along the way. Others move at a more leisurely pace, attending rehearsals and slowly absorbing the repertoire for as long as six months before making that final commitment. We feel strongly that each prospective member will know when the time is right for her and we hope that whatever the final outcome you will feel that the time you spent with Silk’n Sounds was a positive experience!
