WHO WE ARE
Silk’n Sounds was founded in 1998 and
chartered as a chapter of
Harmony, Inc., in 1999. We have been
entertaining Connecticut audiences for over ten
years.
A dynamic group of women of all ages, from all
walks of life and communities throughout New Haven
County, Silk’n Sounds boasts nearly 40
members tied together by a common thread – a love of
music. More than 100 women have enjoyed membership
in Silk’n Sounds over the past 10 years.
We believe a cappella harmony in the barbershop
style is one of the most exciting and challenging
art forms in the world, providing endless
opportunities for our continuing musical
development.
As a chapter of Harmony, Inc., a not-for-profit
women’s music education organization, Silk’n
Sounds is able to draw on a first-rate faculty
of coaches and educators to propel us forward in our
art. We hold a weekend coaching retreat each January
as well as in-rehearsal coaching sessions.
Each April, Silk’n Sounds joins with
hundreds of fellow Harmony, Inc. members from the
northeastern United States and eastern Canada for
education and evaluation at a weekend convention and
contest. Choruses and quartets perform before a
panel of judges, and those with high enough scores
qualify to participate in Harmony, Inc.’s
International Contest held each November.
Silk’n Sounds gives 10-12 performances
each year in the community. These performances
include our own concerts or shows, benefit and paid
performances for charitable or civic organizations,
festivals, private groups, church groups, retirement
communities, and nursing homes.
Silk‘n Sounds is a 501 (c) 3,
not-for-profit organization. Our funding sources
include member dues, performance fees and ticket
sales, program ads, fundraising projects, foundation
grants, donations and business
sponsorships.
